Rugs are a simple yet effective way to transform any room in a matter of minutes. They come in all shapes, sizes, materials, and thicknesses, and can make even the dullest of rooms stand out, for a relatively small investment. These are some of the things you should bear in mind when shopping for a rug, but we’ll leave that for another day.
Traditionally rugs were used to cover hard covering floors, but nowadays they can be used in all kinds of fresh and funky ways. As mentioned above, decorating with rugs doesn’t need to cost a fortune either. In most of the examples that follow used rugs are perfectly fine to use and are a great way to transform your room if on a budget.
Here’s just a few creative ideas to get your juices flowing as to how to decorate with rugs in a way that takes you away from the norm:
- Convert them into pillows
If you’re looking for a way to accentuate the sofa a little, why not make some rug pillows. It’s not too hard to do and is especially useful if you’re looking to upgrade to a new rug anyway. So, cut up the old one, make some gorgeous pillows out of it, then buy a new rug to bring it all together.
- Use it as a bed throw
For an authentic touch, try adding a rug to your bed. It’s an easy way to add a splash of colour or pattern to your bedroom. A flat-weave rug normally works best here. When you want to climb in, simply roll up the rug and move it to the foot of the bed where it will still look good.
- An easy alternative sofa covering
Upholstery can be expensive, and so can replacing sofas and chairs when they become ripped. So instead, why not use a rug to update your decor? They don’t need to be sewn on to be effective and are much more durable than most sofa or chair coverings. Simply drape the rug over the sofa or chair and you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes to the room.
- Hang it on the wall
The great thing about rugs is not only do they protect the surface they’re covering whether its the floor, wall, or ceiling, but they also double up as a work of art. By hanging a rug on the wall, not only will it last much longer than if on the floor, but it will also transform your space into a mini art gallery at a fraction of the cost. The other bonus is there’s usually much less furniture to contend with on the wall too.
- Have fun with shapes
If you would prefer to have your rug on the floor, then why not mix it up a little and get a rug that’s a different shape to that of the standard rectangle that most people opt for. The only thing to bear in mind here is where you’re going to place the rug and how it will fit.
Rugs are more versatile than you might first think and with a little creative thinking can transform a rooms design or function.
