Picking Out a Practical Yet Fashionable Winter Coat for Yourself

Perhaps the most important item in your winter wardrobe is your coat. Without a decent one it is impossible to stay warm and dry enough.

Will it keep you warm?

Top of your list of priorities has to be staying warm and dry. Just because a coat looks heavy or waterproof, does not mean that it is. If it has not been put together well or is not made from good-quality fabric it will not be warm enough.

So, before you buy or decide to keep one that you have bought online, take a critical look at it. Make sure the seams are strong and that the fabric is of good quality.

Here are some of the features that will help to keep you feeling warmer:

A hood – a hood is always a good idea. If you do not like them much, simply choose one with a detachable hood. The fact that you can potentially create two different looks with this type of coat is an added advantage.

A weatherproof fastening – whether you choose a button-up coat or one with a zip you want to be sure that the wind cannot get in through the opening. Always choose one with a covered zip or an internal zip flap.

If you like button up coats, consider buying a double-breasted one. The two layers of fabric will keep you warmer and stop the wind from getting in.

A belt or drawstring waist – it is surprising how much warmer you will feel wearing a coat or jacket that is cinched in at the waist. This simple design innovation reduces the amount of cold air that can travel up from the bottom of your coat to your chest area. Numerous studies show that the key to staying warm is protecting the core of your body from the cold.

Make sure your coat is water resistant

The surest way to make yourself ill is wearing wet clothes. So, it really is worth looking for a coat that is at least water resistant. Of course, you can use an umbrella, but on days when it is both wet and windy a brolly will not keep you completely dry. That is why I suggest that you buy a water-resistant coat.
